pope speaks astronauts

pope speaks astronauts
pope speaks astronauts. Pope Benedict XVI spoke Saturday with the astronauts aboard the International Space Station, and specifically mentioned Cmdr. Mark Kelly's wife, Gabrielle Giffords, who is recuperating from recent brain surgery.

"I know that Mark and his wife were the victim of a serious attack, and I hope that her health continues to improve," the pope said.

Kelly thanked the pope for mentioning Giffords. The Arizona congresswoman was shot in the head in a January assassination attempt.

The two men also talked about how technology used in space may be able to help relations between people on Earth.

"I think it must be obvious to you how we all live together on one Earth, and how absurd it is that we fight and kill each one," the pontiff said.

"We fly over most of the world and we don't see borders, but at the same time we realize that people fight with each other and there is a lot of violence in this world," Kelly said.

Unlike on Earth, technology on the space station allows for almost unlimited power from the sun, he said.

"If these technologies could be adopted more on Earth, we could possibly reduce some of that violence," he said.

The space shuttle Endeavour launched last Monday on a 16-day mission.

Diddy Swag

Diddy Swag New Name
Diddy Swag New Name. Diddy was nearly eaten alive by the flu last week, but he survived and in honor of his comeback (Can you call it a "comeback" when nobody wants you to come back?) he has decided to rename himself "Swag" for the next week. Don't ask me why he chose Swag, but Diddy made the announcement during one of his videocasts. You know, Diddy has come by Puffy, P. Diddy, Sean Comes, Puff, Piddly, Diddly, etc..and now his stupid ass wants us to call him by yet another name? When we're all sucked into the funnel to the other world tomorrow and I'm flying past Diddy, do I really want to spend the last moments of life wondering whether or not I should greet his ass as "Diddy" or "Swag"? No. Let's keep shit simple. While Diddy changes his name to WHATEVER he wants, we can continue to call him "Douche." It sums up everything about him perfectly and it's a classic. It's like the asshole version of John. And since Diddy likes to keep shit fancy, we'll even add an accent at the end for him. Douché! It's perfect!

Cell Phone Cancer

Cell Phone Cancer
Cell phone cancer. Cellular (cell) phones first became widely available in the United States in the 1990s, but their use has increased dramatically since then. According to the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association, there were an estimated 270 million cell phone subscribers in the United States as of December 2008, representing about 87% of the total population.

Based on the large and still growing number of cell phone users (both adults and children), and the fact that cell phones give off radio-frequency (RF) waves, some concerns have been raised about the safety of cell phone use. With respect to cancer, concern focuses on whether cell phones might increase the risk of brain tumors or other tumors in the head and neck area.

How do cell phones work?

Cell phones communicate with nearby cell towers through RF waves, a form of energy located on the electromagnetic spectrum between FM radio waves and microwaves. Like FM radio waves, microwaves, visible light, and heat, they are a form of non-ionizing radiation. They cannot cause cancer by directly damaging DNA. RF waves are different from stronger types of radiation such as x-rays, gamma rays, and ultraviolet (UV) light, which can break the chemical bonds in DNA.

At very high levels, RF waves can heat up body tissues. (This is the basis for how microwave ovens work.) But the levels of energy given off by cell phones are much lower, and the warmth from a cell phone does not damage body tissues.

How are people exposed?

The RF waves from cell phones come from the antenna, which is part of the body of a hand-held phone. The waves are strongest at the antenna and lose energy as they travel away from the phone. The phone is typically held against the side of the head when in use. The closer the antenna is to the head, the greater a person's expected exposure to RF energy.

Many factors can affect the amount of RF energy to which a person is exposed, including:

* The amount of time the person is on the phone
* The model of phone being used: different phones give off different amounts of energy
* Whether or not the person is using a hands-free device
* The distance and path to the nearest cell phone tower: being farther away from the tower requires more energy to get a good signal, as does being inside a building
* The amount of cell phone traffic in the area at the time

Other factors may also affect exposure. For example, older cell phones (analog models) used more energy than newer, digital phones.

The amount of RF energy absorbed from the phone into the user's local tissues is known as the specific absorption rate (SAR). Different cell phones have different SAR levels. Cell phone makers are required to report the SAR level of their product to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This information is sometimes listed inside the battery compartment on the phone. The upper limit of SAR allowed in the United States is 1.6 watts per kilogram (W/kg) of body weight.

Man finds thousands in cash at new home

Man finds thousands in cash at new home
Man finds thousands in cash at new home. A man who found more than $40,000 cash in the Utah home he recently bought has returned the money to its rightful owner, The Salt Lake City Tribune reported Thursday.

Josh Ferrin discovered the money stuffed in eight ammo boxes in the attic while he was exploring a workshop room in the Bountiful home on Tuesday.

"I opened it up, freaked out. Closed it, locked it in my truck and called my wife," Ferrin said of the surprise.

At the time he thought of his car troubles, repairs and renovations for the house and his desire to adopt a child -- but he returned it to the owner.

"I couldn't let myself consider the money mine," he said.

"This little guy [the previous homeowner] didn't put it there for me. He put it there for a rainy day," he said.

Ferrin took the eight boxes to his parents' home, where he counted the money with his wife Tara and two children, Oliver and Lincoln.

The previous owner of the home was Arnold Bangerter, a father of six who died in November. Bangerter, who worked for the state's fisheries, purchased the home in the mid-1960s because of the giant tree in the backyard.

"I knew he was a father and I am a father, too. And I can understand thinking about the future and your children," Ferrin said.

Ferrin tracked down Bangerter's youngest son Dennis and his brother Kay who said they would split the money between the six siblings.

Former Teammate says Lance Armstrong used drugs

Former Teammate says Lance Armstrong used drugs
Former Teammate says Lance Armstrong used drugs. yler Hamilton joined Floyd Landis on the list of cyclists who once worked for Lance Armstrong but now say the seven-time Tour de France winner used performance-enhancing drugs. In an interview with "60 Minutes," Hamilton admitted that he doped and said Armstrong did, as well — using the blood booster EPO in the 1999 Tour and before the race in 2000 and 2001. Armstrong's string of seven straight wins lasted from 1999-2005.

"I saw (EPO) in his refrigerator. ... I saw him inject it more than one time, like we all did. Like I did, many, many times," Hamilton said in the "60 Minutes" interview that was aired Thursday on the "CBS Evening News."

He said Armstrong "took what we all took ... the majority of the peloton," referring to riders in the race. "There was EPO ... testosterone ... a blood transfusion."

Armstrong immediately refuted the Hamilton interview, launching a website that denied the claims. He also tweeted: "20+ year career. 500 drug controls worldwide, in and out of competition. Never a failed test. I rest my case."

But the Hamilton interview keeps the news of Armstrong and his alleged doping program in the headlines.

Last week, The Associated Press reported that a federal investigation into whether Armstrong and his former U.S. Postal team ran a systematic doping program is pushing into its second year, and that the feds recently asked French authorities for evidence in a request that mentions Armstrong by name.

As it did when Landis made his accusations, Armstrong's camp was quick to undercut the credibility of the accuser.

"Hamilton is actively seeking to make money by writing a book, and now he has completely changed the story he has always told before so that he could get himself on '60 Minutes' and increase his chances with publishers," Armstrong attorney Mark Fabiani said. "But greed and a hunger for publicity cannot change the facts: Lance Armstrong is the most tested athlete in the history of sports: He has passed nearly 500 tests over twenty years of competition."

A report by ESPN said Hamilton sent a letter to friends apologizing for lying about his past drug use. He said he testified six hours before the Los Angeles grand jury investigating Armstrong.

It will be up to the members of the grand jury to decide whether they believe the Hamilton who steadfastly denied doping for years — at times concocting elaborate excuses for his positive tests — or the one who testified under oath about the Armstrong case.

Landis, meanwhile, is an unlikely witness in this case, even though it was his revelations a year ago this week that poured fuel on the investigation.

He was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title after testing positive for taking synthetic testosterone, denied taking performance-enhancing drugs for years, then finally admitted he doped for much of his career — a mea culpa that also implicated Armstrong.

Asked to comment on Hamilton's interview, Landis said in an email to The AP: "The only comment I have is that I wish the best for Tyler."

Hamilton, 40, won a cycling gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games but failed a drug test later. He was allowed to keep his medal, however, because problems at a laboratory meant his backup 'B' sample could not be tested.

Lakeysha beard arrested

Lakeysha beard arrested
Lakeysha beard arrested. Salem Police stopped an Amtrak train on Sunday afternoon after reports a woman threatened other passengers when they complained she was speaking too loudly on her cell phone.

Lakeysha Beard of Tigard was charged with disorderly conduct after police said she got into a “verbal altercation” with passengers on the train. The other passengers complained she refused to put down her cell phone, even after train staff made repeated announcements for passengers to not use cell phones, according to police.

When a passenger confronted her about her loud talking, police said Beard got aggressive. She had reportedly been talking non-stop on the phone since getting on the train in Oakland, Calif.

Beard was taken into custody until a family member could come and pick her up.

The train pulled out of the station in Oakland at 10 p.m. the night before, according to Amtrak spokeswoman Verae Graham. Conductors on the train coordinated with police to stop the train at a crossing about two miles from the Salem station. That was around 2 p.m.

The train was the Coast Starlight, which runs between Los Angeles and Seattle.

Graham said Amtrak has no formal policy that bans people from talking on cell phones while the train is moving.

KATU tried to contact Beard for comment but could not reach her.

The train was stopped for about 20 minutes before it continued on to Portland.

Kelsey Grammer Custody

Kelsey Grammer custody. The Frasier star — who has Mason, nine, and six-year-old Jude with ex-wife Camille Grammer — has reportedly lodged legal papers with the Los Angeles County Superior Court in an attempt to obtain sole physical custody of the youngsters.

According to gossip website TMZ, the 56-year-old actor has rejected his former spouse’s custody offer of 50-50 care split between the two of them.

However, with Kelsey — who married 29-year-old Kayte Walsh in February — currently based in Chicago and his children registered in schools in Los Angeles, it is not clear where he would want the kids to live if his request were to be granted.

Camille — a stay at home mother — has admitted she is stunned at her ex-husband’s new demands, and thinks he is being “insensitive” towards their offspring.

“Kelsey is being insensitive to our children,” she said.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the actor has refused to comment on the custody battle, saying the filing of the legal papers “speaks for itself”.

“Any statement would be inappropriate,” said the spokesman. “The filing speaks for itself.”

Global planking craze gets fatal

Police caution as 'planking' goes global

Is it worth life in a wheelchair to take a funny photo to impress somebody you don't know on the Internet?

This is the question police in Australia have posed after a man died on Sunday taking part in the latest craze going viral on the Internet -- "planking".

Acton Beale, 20, plunged to his death after positioning himself for a picture on a balcony railing seven floors up in Brisbane after a night out drinking.

He was a "planker", a fast-growing group of people who lie flat on their stomachs with their arms against their bodies -- to resemble a plank -- in unusual and sometimes dangerous situations.

Photographs of their exploits are then shared through social media sites.

Little-known until last week when a man was charged with planking on a police car, the Planking Australia Facebook page has seen its number of fans soar from under 10,000 four days ago to almost 100,000 on Monday.

The craze, and news of Beale's death, has sparked copy-cat Facebook sites around the world, including Planking UK, Planking USA, Planking France and Planking Germany.

But police are worried that the fad could spin out of control.

"We don't have any problem with planking itself," Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Ross Barnett told reporters.

"If you want to take a photograph of yourself planking on a park bench two foot off the ground, there are no risks to your health with that.

"But when you start doing it seven storeys up or lying across a railway line or in a range of other places that invite death or serious injury, that's what we have a concern about.

"Ultimately, is it worth life in a wheelchair to take a funny photo to impress somebody you don't know on the Internet?"

Prime Minister Julia Gillard also had words of caution on Monday.

"Well, I guess there's a difference between a harmless bit of fun... and taking a risk with your life," she said.

"This (death) is a really tragic thing -- there'd be a family that's just devastated today.

"So, my message would be everybody likes a bit of fun, but focus has to be on keeping yourself safe first."

Sam Weckert, the founder of the Facebook page dedicated to planking in Australia, denied the craze encourages people to take unnecessary risks.

"Planking was started as a fun and quirky past-time," he was quoted as saying by Australian media.

"While we have no control over the actions of others we'd like to encourage any members of the planking group and the general public to undertake this in a safe and responsible fashion."

"We would like to encourage all planking members as well as the media not to sensationalise this tragic event," he added, referring to Beale's death.

The trend has spawned how-to videos on YouTube and the term now has a Wikipedia entry.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, planking started to become popular several years ago in Europe and Japan, where it was known as "the lying down game".

But it has only taken off recently with the phrase "planking" believed to have been coined in Australia.

Bobby Bonilla big payday

Bobby Bonilla big payday
New York’s second baseball team is going to start paying ex-slugger Bobby Bonilla, who hasn’t played for the Mets since 1999 and retired from all of baseball in 2001, $1.2 million per year for the next 25 years ($30 million total), according to the New York Post. Bonilla’s big payday comes per an agreement reached between the two sides in order to secure the player’s exit from Queens. Rather than allowing Bonilla to collect $5.9 million for the final year of his contract in 2000, the Mets agreed to cut him but would start paying off the money in 2011 at 8 percent interest over 25 years.

The current ownership group, which was hurt by the schemes of Bernie Madoff among other financial maladies, have been trying to sell a part of the team to stay financially fit.

Bonilla, on the other hand, has been living quite comfortable in his time since leaving the game. According to the Post, he already earns a $500,000-per-year salary from the Orioles under similar circumstances and $200,000 from a job as a “special assistant” to the MLB Players Association. He also owns an $8 million home in Greenwich, Conn.

America's Most Wanted Canceled

'America's Most Wanted' Canceled By Fox After 23 Years On Air
Fox is canceling "America's Most Wanted," the Saturday night show that has profiled criminals on the lam since 1988, and replacing it with reruns.

It was part of Fox's plans for its next television season announced on Monday. Fox will introduce eight new series in the coming months, including Simon Cowell's talent show "The X Factor" and the long-awaited debut of Steven Spielberg's drama about a futuristic family thrust into prehistoric times.

"America's Most Wanted" has been on Fox's schedule since April 1988 and a Saturday night mainstay since 1994. Its website posts a running tally of fugitives featured on the program that have been captured – and it stood at 1,151 on Monday. It is hosted by John Walsh, who became an activist in hunting for missing children after his own son was abducted and killed in 1981.

Fox said "America's Most Wanted" will have four, two-hour specials next season. But in its regular Saturday night time slot, Fox will air reruns of dramas that appeared earlier in the week, a cost-saving move that other broadcasters also do that night.

"We have not made money on the show for a while," said Kevin Reilly, Fox's entertainment president. "It was economically getting to the place where it was not viable anymore, but we wanted to keep the concept alive."

Still, Reilly said there was "a lot of talking going on, and I would not be at all surprised to see the show pop up somewhere else."

"America's Most Wanted" had a longer history as a regular series on Fox than even "The Simpsons," the cartoon first seen as part of "The Tracey Ullman Show" in 1987 before becoming a series two years later.

Walsh said that Reilly told him of the cancellation on Sunday. "I was quite surprised," Walsh said. "Maybe we don't make money, but we hold the night, and we were the first hit for Fox."

He said he would be talking with Fox's production company for other possible outlets, including syndication.

Fox is so excited about Cowell's return following his exit as an "American Idol" judge last year that it is devoting 90 minutes of its prime-time schedule this fall to "The X Factor" even though the concept is new to an American audience. It will follow the same Wednesday and Thursday schedule as "Idol."

"There's an excitement and a buzz around the show that we've never seen before," said Peter Rice, Fox network chairman. Success could be a game-changer for Fox, which traditionally suffers in the ratings in the fall because "American Idol" does not begin until January.

The Spielberg drama "Terra Nova" comes to Fox's schedule almost a year later than was expected. The series was filmed in Australia and is filled with special effects.

It premieres in the fall, along with two comedies. Actress Zooey Deschanel is the star of "New Girl," playing a woman in her late 20s who moves in with three single guys after a bad breakup. Another new Fox comedy, "I Hate My Teenage Daughter," features Jaime Pressly and Katie Finneran playing as moms with teenage daughters who are exactly like the kids that once tormented the mothers when they were in high school.

Johnny Depp & Queen Elizabeth II cousins

Johnny Depp believed to be distant cousin of Queen Elizabeth II
HOLLYWOOD royalty for years, Johnny Depp was hailed as a possible distant relative of the current British monarchy, the Sunday Mirror reported.

Ancestry experts said they were able to work a connection which established the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star and Queen Elizabeth II as 20th cousins.

The bloodline was not set in stone, though, with genealogists admitting they were relying upon an unreported but widely known marriage from the 17th-century to link the pair.

After delving into the family background of Depp, who was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1963, Dr. Nick Barratt said he was confident in declaring the actor and the queen as relatives.

"I believe the balance of probability is that there is indeed a link between Depp and the royals," he said, but cautioned, "I doubt we'll ever be able to prove it 100 per cent."

fukushima worker dies

Worker dies at crippled Japan nuclear power plant
A worker died after collapsing at a facility in the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, its owner said Saturday.

The man in his 60s was rushed to hospital unconscious after working for 50 minutes, according to Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant's owner.

He was declared dead at the hospital on Saturday morning. The cause of death is unknown.

The contract worker was on his second day at the plant, and was wearing protective gear at the time, the company said.

He was exposed to 0.17 millisieverts of radiation, the company said.

Japanese health officials have set a cumulative limit of 250 millisieverts per year before workers must leave the plant.

The plant has faced a series of setbacks since a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11. The disasters triggered a glitch in the plant's cooling system, and caused radiation to leak.

As crews work to bring the problems under control, the government said this week it would compensate more than 78,000 displaced by the nuclear disaster.

Navy chaplains and same-sex unions

Navy chaplains and same-sex unions
Navy chaplains will be trained about their ability to perform same-sex civil marriage ceremonies under new guidance that would take effect should the Defense Department move to recognize openly gay military service.Navy officials said Monday that they updated the training after questions came up about civil ceremonies for gay couples. Military training to apply the new law allowing gays to serve openly began early this year and is expected to be complete by midsummer.

In earlier training guidelines issued by the Defense Department and the military services, same-sex marriage ceremonies were not mentioned, and therefore not explicitly prohibited.

Pentagon spokeswoman Eileen Lainez said Monday that the federal Defense of Marriage Act does not restrict the types of ceremonies a chaplain may perform in a chapel on a military base. The military would not compel chaplains to perform a same-sex marriage if it would be against their religious beliefs.

The Pentagon has been moving carefully to implement the repeal of the 17-year-old ban on openly gay troops. Under the law passed and signed by the president late last December, final implementation will go into effect 60 days after the president and his senior defense advisers certify that lifting the ban will not adversely affect troops' ability to fight.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has asked for updates every two weeks, and so far defense officials have said there have been no reported problems.

The Navy ceremonies would be allowed at military facilities such as chapel and catering centers, but only in states that already recognize same-sex unions.

louisiana spillway

louisiana spillway
With the opening of a major spillway all but certain in Louisiana, residents in the flood zone made preparations for the consequences of the decision.

In order to lower anticipated cresting levels along the rising Mississippi River and divert water from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could open the Morganza Spillway as early as Saturday.

The move would flood parts of low-lying south-central Louisiana.

"Right now, a lot of people are real nervous about it. It's sad," said Larry Doiron, a resident of Stephenville, a town that could face flooding because of the spillway's opening. "We need to have protection so that they don't flood us."

He said his subdivision would likely be fine, as it was built at a relatively high elevation, but that his neighbors were building additional levees and putting out sandbags.

Morgan City, which sits on the banks of the Atchafalaya River, could also see rising water if the spillway is opened.

"Really, we're just waiting," said Evie Bertaut, who has lived in Morgan City for 50 years.

Officials believe that the levees will protect the city from flooding, but some are taking preliminary precautions, she said. At Sacred Heart Church, where Bertaut works, people spent the day moving important documents such a baptismal, marriage and financial records to the second floor.

"Most people are getting their photographs together, things that you can't replace in case you have to go," she said.

The Mississippi River Commission has directed the Corps to operate the crucial spillway once river flows reach a certain trigger: 1.5 million cubic feet per second. Projections indicate the tipping point could be hit as early as Saturday evening, Jindal has said.

Opening the spillway would lower anticipated cresting levels along the lower Mississippi River and divert water from Baton Rouge and New Orleans but would flood much of low-lying south-central Louisiana. Seven parishes are expected to be affected by the opening -- Pointe Coupee, St. Landry, St. Martin, Iberia, Iberville, St. Mary and Terrebonne -- according to the Corps.

disney trademark seal 6

disney trademark seal 6
The name of the elite team that killed Osama bin Laden could soon be appearing on Disney snow globes if the company has its way. Disney submitted an application to trademark the name "Seal Team 6" within 48 hours of the raid that killed bin Laden, Mediabistro reports. The trademark paperwork lists potential uses including gymnastic articles, toys, games, and even Christmas stockings and ornaments.

The applications are currently pending and experts expect that they will be approved if regulators decide consumers won't be confused. "No one is likely to believe Disney and the government have some type of formal affiliation," a trademark lawyer tells WKMG. Records show that game developer NovaLogic applied for the same trademark in 2004 but it was abandoned after two years.

Network Rail Employs Flock Of Sheep To Save Wild Orchids

Network Rail Employs Flock Of Sheep To Save Wild Orchids
Until now Network Rail has had to pay staff or rely on volunteers to keep the brambles and hawthorn scrub, which poses a threat to the rare orchids, in check.Regular and careful maintenance is required because rare flowers and native grasses would otherwise be crowded out of their natural habitat.

But it has discovered that the job can be done just as well by the Wiltshire Horn, a breed of sheep with short fleece that naturally moults in the spring.

This makes the animals less likely to get tangled up in the scrub and bushes.

While they do eat the scrub, apparently the sheep do not touch the rare flowers.

They are also not members of the RMT rail union, and therefore unlikely to take industrial action.

The sheep and shepherd – described by Network Rail its High Output Ovine Vegetation System (HOOVES) – have been provided by Huntingdonshire District Council.

But at a time when it is coming under pressure to cut costs where it can, the four-legged intervention has been warmly welcomed by Network Rail chiefs.

“Britain’s railway network provides a 20,000 mile green corridor spanning the length and breadth of the country, home to some of our rarest species and a major source of biodiversity,” stated Steve Featherstone, the company’s maintenance director

The partnership we’ve put in place with the Council means we can continue to improve standards at Great Stukeley while driving down costs – which is good news for nature lovers and taxpayers alike.”

Seychelles Islands Royal Honeymoon

Seychelles Islands Royal Honeymoon
After months of secrecy, the news of where Prince William and Kate would spend their honeymoon finally leaked this week. Sources say the royal newlyweds are currently in the Seychelles for a 10-day trip.
Back in February, we named "Renting a private island in the Seychelles" as one of our "Five best getaways for a royal honeymoon". It appears we were prescient, since that's exactly what the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did. Vladi Private Islands has said that it rented the secluded North Island to the royal family.

Since the media frenzy surrounding the vacation is focused on the couple's itinerary, we thought we would offer a few suggestions for anyone looking to create a fantasy honeymoon in the remote archipelago off the east coast of Africa.

Whether you rent the entire island or simply stay in one of the luxury villas that the Seychelles are known for, this trip is a recipe for pure relaxation. Since money is no object in fantasy honeymoons, opt for the extremely private Villa 11, aka the "Villa North Island", (a mere 3,340 euros per person, per night). Hidden in the Takamaka forest at the northern tip of the island, Villa 11 sits on a private beach and offers incredible views of the Indian Ocean. The villa comes complete with a 5,400-square-foot sundeck, two lounges, a media room, an open-air bathroom, chef service and butler service. Unlimited scuba diving is also included. Enjoy access to a holistic spa and gorgeous restaurants with lounge seating right on the beach.
